China’s leading wafer foundry SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation中芯国际) reached a record high again in its performance last year, according to its 4th quarter report released on February 10. It has become the fastest-growing wafer foundry among the world’s top four, with a 39% revenue growth rate.

SMIC’s total revenue in 2021 reached US$5.4431 billion. It increased from $3 billion within four years, ranking fourth in the world, followed by TSMC (24.9%), GlobalFoundries (36%), and UMC (20.5%).

The SMIC’s report shows its 4th quarterly revenue at US$1.5801 billion, a gross profit of US$552.8, a year-on-year increase of 212.7%, and a gross profit margin that increased to 35.0%.

Even under the influence of complex geopolitical factors and multiple uncertainties, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, SMIC’s production expansion in 2021 still exceeded expectations. It enhanced its mature process capacity, expanded platform varieties, and continuously improved profitability.

This achievement reflects the company’s capability to seek opportunities from the crisis and the boom of the semiconductor industry in the world.

SMIC was founded in Shanghai in 2000. With more than 15,000 employees, its patent ownership ranks first in the IC manufacturing industry in China’s mainland. It has fabs in Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, and Shenzhen.

The company was listed on the HKEX in 2004 and on the Sci-Tech Innovation Board STAR market in 2020.
