(JW Insights) Sep 7 -- Global semiconductor equipment billings dipped 2% year-over-year to $25.8 billion in the second quarter of 2023, while quarter-over-quarter billings slipped 4%, SEMI announced on September 6th in its Worldwide Semiconductor Equipment Market Statistics (WWSEMS) Report.
By region, China ranked first with $7.55 billion in semiconductor equipment shipments in the second quarter, an increase of 15% from $6.56 billion in the second quarter of 2022.
The Taiwan region posted $5.69 billion, down 15% from $6.68 billion in the same period last year; South Korea ranked third with $5.65 billion in semiconductor equipment shipments in the second quarter, down 2% from $5.78 billion in the second quarter of last year; North American shipments were $2.95 billion, an increase of 12% from $2.64 billion year on year.
“Overall demand for capital equipment remains strong despite uncertainty that continued to pervade the macroeconomy in the first half of 2023,” said Ajit Manocha, SEMI president and CEO. “During the report period, some semiconductor market segments exercised caution in capital equipment investments, though the impact across regions varied.”
Regarding the future expectations of global semiconductor equipment, SEMI Global Marketing Chief Cao Shilun recently stated that the total sales of global semiconductor equipment this year will fall by 18.6% from last year’s $107.4 billion to $87.4 billion and rebound in 2024 back to the $100 billion level again.
